INSIDE HOLLYWOOD: Hydra Train concept sketches Captain America

Never had to draw a steam train before, took me a little bit of research to get into it. We found a German streamline train that we all very much liked, the sketches all jump of that. More inspiration came
from the amazing American steam train styling of Art Deco by designers such as Otto Kuhler, Raymond Loewy or Henry Dreyfuss.

INSIDE HOLLYWOOD: Tron Uprising Concepts

The production asked for a 'classic helicopter', yet Tron-esque. My favorite proposal, very geometric, with tiny jet fighter cockpit and octagon fuselage. Considered too abstract / needed more interior space for filming.
This version has a twin gunner cockpit like usual combat helicopters have, and we carried this over into the final design.

This version has a strong cross section which was slightly inspired by the amazing Star Wars Republic Gunship, one of my favorite film vehicles. Guards would always stand exposed, barrel stylized cockpit. Not considered.

FRIENDS WORK: David Levy - Prometheus

Prometheus owes much of it's great look to David Levy. He just uploaded tons of his contribution to his blog. We both came to Hollywood for Tron, to the same desk, and I was happy to briefly be part of the Prometheus team amongst him, Ben Procter and Steven Messing. Everything you see here from David was done 10 times faster then you can possibly imagine, his techniques are extremely fascinating to watch.

INSIDE HOLLYWOOD: Tron Uprising Concepts

The design process on Tron Uprising was brutally fast with no turning backs. As Lead Vehicle Designer I tried to maintain the agenda that Uprising vehicles are geometric yet dynamic shapes and silhouettes that can be broken down into an algorithm and will look out of place in any other world.

LIGHT TRAIN: This cubist train features a steam train inspired light line animation on the side. The fact it will also twist up side down was added after this design got approved. Engine car always at center.

TESSLER'S BASE: Going along with the simplicity agenda, the villain's base is a good example for finding reduced yet directional shapes. Final design in red. 20,000 soldiers on board.

LIGHT CHOPPER: An angular and upright concept for the helicopter. This one got picked, only few modifications on the sharp edges could be applied in time. Alternative concepts will be posted soon.

SERGIO PININFARINA: 1926 - 2012

Italian car design super legend Sergio Pininfarina passed away last night at 85. He shaped automotive dreams of generations like no other, and the decades of wonderful sculpting for Ferrari will stand forever.
Pininfarina badges should be much bigger on cars like the 288 GTO, favorite dream car of my teenage years.
